Communicating the Bioeconomy: The European Commission organises a workshop for journalists

The event will offer a unique opportunity for participants to deepen their understanding of the Bioeconomy, to exchange views and experiences, and to contribute to the debate on how to
communicate this complex concept.

The term Bioeconomy refers to the use of all biological resources, from land and sea, as input into industry and energy production. This includes the use of bio-based processes in the green
industry. Research and innovation is key to the Bioeconomy which addresses important societal challenges such as food security, natural resource scarcity, fossil resource dependence and climate
change, while simultaneously achieving sustainable economic growth.

The media plays a crucial role in communicating this concept to the general public and stakeholders. The workshop will gather established and young journalists from all European Member States
in order to address the challenge of communicating the Bioeconomy. Journalists and Communication Professionals will be able to debate with high profile speakers and peers from across Europe,
facilitating knowledge sharing and collaboration.

The strength of the programme lies in interactive sessions, covering a full range of related topics such as: What is the Bioeconomy and how does it influence our lives?; The role of enzymes and
how they influence modern EU medicine and the Bioeconomy; The Science of Taste; and The Innovation Cycle-from research to market uptake.

Experts such as Rachel Edwards-Stuart a Food Scientist in the UK and Dr. Hellmut Münch who uses new high-quality enzyme products, individually manufactured for patient’s, to increase
recovery from conditions such as rheumatism, diabetes, autoimmune diseases and cancer, will share their know-how. Christian Patermann, Councillor, Bioeconomy Council, will share his expertise
alongside representatives from the European Commission. The event will be opened by Maive Rute, Director, DG Research and Innovation, Directorate Biotechnologies, Agriculture and Food.
