Six Reasons to Visit Uganda and Go Back Again

After reading some positive travel reports on a forum was getting more and more intrigued about Uganda, and decided to buy my ticket and planned to stay for about a month. I have never been to Africa before and wasn’t sure what to expect but was allured by the exoticism of a new continent.
The people make the place
Once somebody said that it’s the people that make the place, and can totally agree with that regarding Uganda.

The people in this country are some of the sweetest, well behaved and friendly human beings you’ ll even encounter in your life. Folks are nice and well mannered, and don’ t have egocentric attitudes, which makes it easier to make new friends.
When you walk on the streets you are always welcomed, and you are not being treated as a tourist cow to squeeze, as it happen in countries like Jamaica. The environment is safe, and you can even walk late at night in Kampala the capital and biggest city without worries. You can be impressed by the good behavior of men as there is no shouting or riots and even in traffic jams people remain calm.

Your money in Uganda it’ s stretched up

Uganda is a pretty affordable destination, with a cost of a good meal by international standards at about 5-8 U.S.$. You can get good healthy foods in a popular chain restaurant called Java House, and in my favorite spot inside the Acacia Mall in Kampala at Caffesserie. Only the accommodations are a bit expensive for tourists, and would advise to only book 1 or 2 nights and then search a place when on site. By doing this you can avoid what happened to me as I booked an AirBnB that was affordable but did not look like in the pics of the ad.

I only stayed for a few hours and it was enough, the noise in the complex was unbearable so packed my stuff and was able to escape uninjured after it took me one hour to cut the stuck door lock that trapped me. It’ s advisable to stay in Kololo, which is considered the nicest area of Kampala, as you are close to shops, night clubs and can avoid traffic jams. For a nice apartment that can fit up to 4 people at the Golf Course Apartments you can spend about 50 $ a night. For transfers from Entebbe to Kampala or Jinja use Pinapple Express as it is affordable and offers a good service that will only set you back 20 $ if you share the car with someone else.

Kampala it’ s the capital of the Country and the nightlife

The traffic in Kampala it’ s an experience by itself, as there is limited public transportation in Uganda so it’ s best to avoid rush traffic hours from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. To move in traffic your best bet is to use a Boda Boda which is a 125cc.-150cc. motorcycle that is driven by an Ugandan man. It can be quite fun to ride on it and it’s best to use some of the app such as Uber so you know how much you are being charged(usually $ 1 for a couple of miles trip). Alternatively if you like being rubbed, you can beckon a “taxy” which is a van for 8 people capacity but they are able to cram in as many as 12 people packed like sardines in a can.

The nightclub scene it’ s pretty nice and affordable in Kampala with clubs that play good music, and serve cheap drinks. In Kololo there are many venues along Acacia Avenue, from sophisticated clubs such as Illusion or more laid back pubs such as Bubbles O’Learys, so you can bar hop for hours if you like. Also in the industrial area there are preppy clubs such as Guvnor, Silk, Amnesia, and for a more “authentic” experience you can go to Kabalagala where you find plenty of dive bars.

For anything it’ s best to go to the source

After few weeks in Kampala I needed to take a break from city life and reconnect with nature, so headed to Jinja, a small town set by the source of the Nile River, the longest river in the world. In Jinja you can visit the Source of the Nile National Park, and do plenty of activities as hiking, boat touring, or go to a rafting excursions. I chose to take a 5 hours bike ride by the river hosted by Bikeventures, where I joined a group of voluntary dentists from Netherlands, we rode on derelict roads and hilly trails passing by plantains, coffee trees and small villages. The air was fresh and temperature just right, along the way we met people and kids that were ecstatic to see us as: screaming “muzungu” (white man in Ugandan). These kids have life that springs out of their pores, something I don’ t see in the west.

Waragi: The booze it’ s pretty good

Also while you are in Uganda you can try their famous national drink called Waragi, which is like a gin spirit made with cold maceration of either plantain or sugar cane. As this drink can range from 40 to 80 % alcohol it’ s best if you have some food in your belly before sipping on it.

Go to Wandago village, in the outskirts of Jinja, where they make the traditional Waragi which is a lot stronger then the Uganda Waragi you can buy in stores. It is rich and velvety with banana notes and has kick that will set you on alert mode.
As you visit these villages you can appreciate that Ugandan people are happy and grateful with what they have, something as we westerners should learn from them. If you are lucky to visit one of these humble homes built with mud and simple materials, you can see villagers greeting at you intrigued by your presence. Locals are very hospitable and would be honored to show you their home and share food and drinks with you, so be prepared to drink some real Waragi!

Entebbe by the Lake Victoria

Another reason to visit Uganda is to go to Entebbe, where your plane lands, and experience a quiet town with extensive lake sides and small beaches. Entebbe is set on the north shore of Victoria Lake the largest lake in Africa, and offers great excursions such as the Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary were you can see rescued apes reintegrated in a forested ecosystem.
Here there are a couple of shopping malls, and few night clubs were you can really have fun such as Night Riders and Street. In the weekends it’s popular to go to White Castle beach and enjoy fresh seafood, party music, and a fine white sand setting. The Entebbe Zoo it’ s interesting to visit and besides watching animals in their quasi-natural habitat, it’ s possible to take a behind the scenes tour and feed the animals.

Sei motivi per visitare l’Uganda e tornare di nuovo

Dopo aver letto su un forum alcuni resoconti di viaggio positivi sull’Uganda ho deciso di acquistare il mio biglietto e di rimanere là per circa un mese.

Non ero mai stato in Africa prima e non ero sicuro di cosa mi sarebbe aspettato, ma la curiosità dell’esotismo di un nuovo continente ha prevalso.

Sono le persone che fanno il posto; per l’Uganda è proprio vero

Una volta qualcuno ha detto che sono le persone a creare il posto e si può essere sicuramente d’accordo per quanto riguarda l’Uganda.

Le persone di questo paese sono tra le più dolci, ben educate e amichevoli che puoi incontrare. La gente è simpatica, accogliente e non ha atteggiamenti egocentrici, il che rende più facile fare nuove amicizie. Quando cammini per le strade sei sempre il benvenuto, e non sei trattato come una “vacca turistica” da mungere, come accade in paesi come la Giamaica e tanti altri dove conta solo il Dio Denaro. Le strade sono sicure e puoi persino camminare a tarda notte, senza preoccupazioni, anche nella capitale, Kampala, la città più grande dell’Uganda. Puoi essere ben impressionato anche dal buon comportamento degli uomini in quanto non ci sono urla o rivolte e anche negli ingorghi la gente rimane calma.

I tuoi soldi in Uganda valgono di più

L’Uganda è una destinazione abbastanza abbordabile, con un costo di un buon pasto secondo gli standard internazionali a circa 5-8 U.S. $. Puoi ottenere buoni cibi sani in un famoso ristorante della catena chiamato Java House e nel mio posto preferito all’interno dell’Acacia Mall di Kampala presso la Caffetteria.
Solo le prenotazioni alberghiere (n.d.r. …dall’italia) sono un po ‘costose per i turisti fai da te. Per risparmiare è meglio prenotare solo 1 o 2 notti e poi cercare un albergo quando si è sul posto. In questo modo puoi evitare quello che è successo a me quando ho prenotato con AirBnB; dalle foto dell’annuncio sembrava conveniente e accettabile. Sono rimasto solo per poche ore per il rumore insopportabile. Ho preso la mia roba e sono riuscito a scappare incolume dopo che mi ci è voluta un’ora per tagliare la serratura della porta bloccata.

È consigliabile rimanere a Kololo, che è considerata la zona più bella di Kampala, in quanto sei vicino a negozi, locali notturni e puoi evitare ingorghi. Per un grazioso appartamento che può ospitare fino a 4 persone, come quello del campo da golf, puoi spendere circa 50 $ a notte.
Per i trasferimenti da Entebbe a Kampala o Jinja usa Pinapple Express in quanto è economico e offre un buon servizio che ti farà risparmiare circa 20 $ se condividi l’auto con qualcun altro.

La vita notturna a Kampala, capitale dell’Uganda

Il traffico a Kampala è un’esperienza a sé stante, in quanto in Uganda vi sono mezzi pubblici limitati, quindi è meglio evitare le ore di punta dalle 17:00 alle 20. Per spostarti nel traffico, la soluzione migliore è usare una Boda Boda che è una 125cc.-150cc. motocicletta guidata da un ugandese.
Può essere divertente cavalcarlo ma è meglio usare alcune app come Uber in modo da sapere quanto ti viene addebitato (di solito $ 1 per un paio di miglia di viaggio). In alternativa -soluzione un po’ scomoda e poco salutare- puoi usare un “taxy” che è un furgone per 8 persone, ma sono in grado di stiparne fino a 12… imballate come sardine in una lattina.

La vita notturna a Kampala offre varie opportunità, dalle più economiche e conveniente in locali dove suonano buona musica a quelli per chi vuole divertirsi senza badare a spese. A Kololo ci sono molti locali lungo Acacia Avenue, da club sofisticati come Illusion o pub più rilassati come Bubbles O’Learys. Anche nell’area industriale ci sono club preppy come Guvnor, Silk, Amnesia e per un’esperienza più “autentica” di tradizione locale, puoi andare a Kabalagala dove ci sono molti locali.

Per qualsiasi esigenza è meglio andare alla fonte

Dopo alcune settimane a Kampala ho sentito il bisogno di staccarmi dalla vita di città e riconnettermi con la natura, quindi mi sono diretto a Jinja, una piccola città situata vicino alla sorgente del fiume Nilo, il fiume più lungo del mondo. 
A Jinja puoi visitare la Sorgente del Parco Nazionale del Nilo e fare molte attività come escursioni, gite in barca o fare escursioni in rafting. 
Ho scelto di fare un giro in bici di 5 ore lungo il fiume ospitato da Bikeventures, dove mi sono unito a un gruppo di dentisti volontari olandesi, abbiamo pedalato su strade abbandonate e sentieri collinari passando da platani, alberi di caffè e piccoli villaggi.
L’aria era fresca e la temperatura giusta, lungo la strada abbiamo incontrato persone e bambini che erano entusiasti di vederci come: urlando “muzungu” (uomo bianco in Ugandese).
Questi bambini hanno la gioia di vivere nei loro occhi, qualcosa che non vedo ad ovest.

Il Waragi, liquore nazionale

In Uganda puoi assaggiare la loro bevanda nazionale chiamata Waragi, che è come un gin fatto con macerazione a freddo. La base del distillato di waragi può essere ottenuta da manioca, banane, miglio o canna da zucchero, a seconda delle colture coltivate nella regione. Poiché questa bevanda può variare dai 40° agli 80° di alcol, è meglio sorseggiarlo a stomaco pieno.
Vai al villaggio di Wandago, nella periferia di Jinja, dove rendono il Waragi tradizionale molto più forte del Waragi dell’Uganda che puoi acquistare nei negozi. È ricco e vellutato con note di banana.
Mentre visiti questi villaggi puoi capire che gli Ugandesi sono felici e si accontentano di ciò che hanno, quello che noi occidentali dovremmo imparare da loro. Se sei fortunato a visitare una di queste umili case costruite con fango e materiali semplici, puoi vedere gli abitanti del villaggio salutarti incuriositi dalla tua presenza. I locali sono molto ospitali e sono onorati di mostrarti la loro casa e condividere cibo e bevande con te, quindi preparati a bere un vero Waragi!

Entebbe sul Lago Vittoria… già solo questo merita un viaggio in Uganda

Un altro motivo per visitare l’Uganda è andare a Entebbe, -c’è anche un aeroporto- e vivere una città tranquilla con ampie sponde del lago e piccole spiagge. Entebbe si trova sulla sponda nord del lago Victoria, il più grande lago dell’Africa, e offre grandi escursioni come il santuario degli scimpanzé dell’isola di Ngamba dove si possono vedere le scimmie salvate reintegrate in un ecosistema boscoso.
Qui ci sono un paio di centri commerciali e alcuni locali notturni dove ci si può davvero divertire come Night Riders e Street. Nei fine settimana è d’uso andare alla spiaggia di White Castle e gustare pesce fresco, in locali con musica, e intorno un ambiente di sabbia bianca e fine.
Lo zoo di Entebbe è interessante da visitare perchè, oltre a guardare gli animali nel loro habitat quasi naturale, è possibile fare un tour dietro le quinte e dare da mangiare agli animali.
