DISCUSSION TOPIC
The two aspects of food safety and food security are closely intertwined. Presentations and discussions will therefore focus on both aspects by presenting solutions based on improved processing
and packaging technologies.
The conference will foster an integrated approach that can be summarized by the expression “Sustainable Food Technology” (SFT), which refers to requirements or conditions that make technological
solutions best suited not only for the protection of foods, but also for easiness of handling, storage and transportation, convenience, nutritional benefit, fitness in relation to food habits and
raw material availability.
In terms of environmental sustainability, the need to reduce the contamination of foods from biological, chemical and particulate contaminants should pair with the need to protect the environment
from pollution deriving from the food processing systems.

THE MISSION
Create an action plan leading up to the Expo 2015. Ipack-Ima Spa, one of the world’s most important exhibition organizers in the field of processing, packaging and material handling technology,
is involved in a project started in 2009 with the first International conference titled “More Technology, Safety and Quality, Less Hunger”.

PROBLEMS AND OPPORTUNITIES
The conference is going to explore the progresses and technological innovations for the processing and packaging of Cereals and Fruit & Vegetables. Food losses for fruits and vegetables are
estimated to 50% in Sub-Saharan Africa and about 55% in North Africa and Middle East. Regarding cereals, losses are estimated up to 20% in Sub-Saharan Africa and 30% in North Africa and Middle
East.
(Source: FAO 2011). Intervention and progresses in this very complex and differentiated area may require technological means for handling both large and small quantities of food, from storage
centers to family’s supplies.
On the other hand, great prospects are open in Africa to technological development in some Countries and areas which may play a critical role not only as systems for adding value to local produce
but also as model of development in other areas.
In the third place, the discussions at the Ipack-Ima Conference and Fair will also concern exchanges in the education and training of technical people as well as on possibilities of establishing
manufacturing facilities in Africa, especially in the area of packaging plants and materials.

The Italian Ministry of Economic Development, the Italian Ministry of Agriculture, the UN agencies – FAO, UNIDO, WFP, IFAD – and the Scientific Committee.

THE SETTING
IPACK-IMA the international exhibition dedicated to processing, packaging and material handling, back on stage from May 19th to 23rd 2015 at Fiera Milano in conjunction with the Expo 2015.
The motto will be “Feeding the Planet. Energy for life”.

The conference will assure a proactive interaction between the conference’s debates and the Ipack-Ima exhibition and a practical problem/solution approach.
The scientific committee has decided that case studies and practical solutions should represent a key aspect of the conference. Therefore, after the introductory speeches concerning the food
industry development policies and the technological trends, most of the Conference will be devoted to case study presentations in the areas of “cereal and grain-based foods” and “fruit and
vegetables”.
A final short session will be devoted to availability, sources and access to financial resources.
A suitable time is allowed for discussion and exchanges at the end of each technical session and at the Conference’s conclusion.
