Agency supports Year of Food and Farming

By Redazione

The Food Standards Agency is supporting a campaign, led by charity Farming and Countryside Education (FACE), to help children find out more about the countryside and where their food comes
from. The campaign promotes healthy living and making informed decisions about food and healthy nutrition.

Ian Reynolds, FSA Deputy Chair, attended the launch of the Year of Food and Farming (YFF) in September. The YFF runs throughout the academic year and offers young people direct experience of
the countryside, farming and food, supporting curriculum teaching at schools.

How is the FSA supporting the YFF?
The Agency will support the campaign by helping to make more schoolchildren aware of the need to eat healthily. Many of the Agency’s activities
will help encourage schools to adopt a ‘whole school’ approach to diet and nutrition and to ensure young people better understand the relationship between diet and health, help them make more
informed food choices and gain the skills to prepare healthy meals safely.

The FSA also plans to give information on issues relating to food production, so young people can find out about the use of pesticides and veterinary medicines in conventional farming and learn
about organic food.

The FSA section on the YFF website can be found at the link below. Keep visiting to find out more about the Agency’s involvement in the campaign.

Who else is taking part?
Food producers, farmers and a number of organisations will be offering ideas and events, information and teaching materials for participating schools.

The campaign is supported by three other Government Departments: the Department for Children, Schools and Families, the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs and the Department of
Health. Other partners include the Soil Association, the National Farmers’ Union, the British Hospitality Association, the British Retail Consortium and the Food and Drink Federation.
